Everything was in his favour. The border was barely three hundred yards from his position and he could make that in under the minute: twice he had done it against the clock. He was a young man, slim, wiry, with crinkly dark hair and hollows in his cheeks. It was a street-corner face, the grey eyes leaking in the wind, the white nose pinched, the crab-red ears tingling. 1/ the baggy jacket his shirt was 2/ at the neck, a cloth scarf 3/ around his throat. Heavy shoes, worn 4/ , frayed trousers. And 5/ like thin bundles of bone and veins. He glanced at his 6/ . It was exactly eleven minutes to three, 7/ meant he had waited in this place for 8/ nearly five hours already; waited and watched. 9/ view he commanded was exceptional, but only the 10/ interested him. It lay in the through of the 11/ like a length of discarded string, green fields and grey rock climbing to 12/ side. Altogether he could see at 13/ a mile of this narrow road, but nothing 14/ along it. All day nothing had 15/ , no cars, no people, and a 16/ might have concluded the road had been 17/ by mistake, or forgotten by the communities it 18/ presumably meant to serve.

The man who 19/ vigil was not a stranger, though. And he knew that 20/ he waited long enough his patience would be 21/ . He would wait another day 22/ need be. Two days, three - Jesus, yes. 23/ thin calloused fingers he fumbled into a 24/ and pulled out a crumpled pack 25/ unfiltered Camels, extracted a cigarette and ducked his 26/ down towards his right armpit 27/ get lit up. He did it like someone who was hungry.

Just 28/ he heard the helicopter, only an insect's 29/ to begin with yet enough to make his 30/ stiffen. He smashed the cigarette into the earth immediately and searched the sky for something other than scudding streamers of cloud. First the sudden helicopter sweep, then the armoured cars along the road. This was what they were doing now. No warning, yet all the warning in the world. The helicopter's buzz swelled to a snarl. When the man spotted the thing it was banking slightly at about seven or eight hundred feet and he watched it criss-cross the valley, back and forth above the road. He sank down into the leaves and hid his face as the helicopter worked towards him, feeling the air shake as it came thrashing directly over the beech trees, low and threatening, like something searching for him and him alone.
