Zastosowanie:

• Czynność trwała w przeszłości przez dłuższy czas.
  • I was waiting her you all the evening.
• Kiedy czynność dłuższa została przerwana w jakiś sposób przez krótszą.
  • I was learning when she phoned.
  • She was taking a bath when somebody her parents came.
  • She phoned when we were watching TV.
• Kiedy dwie lub więcej czynności trwały równocześnie.
